• As a syncopation sample, here you may listen to Scott Joplin's Maple Leaf Rag, a piano piece composed in ragtime style, characterized by the continious use of syncopation in the melody, as the accompaniment plays plain chords on-beat.

• Offbeat / Contratiempo

• The next song is called Buffalo soldier, by Bob Marley in reggae style. The rhythmic guitar accompaniment is made out of off-beat chords.

This is another example. In this case is a piece by Beethoven in which the theme is build by two phrases whose motifs create a sense of unity:

One more example on how a very simple motif (only three notes: Eb-D-D) may build a complete phrase and be the cornerstone of the whole theme:

• Polyphonic texture / Polifonía: Two or more melodies (voices or instruments or mixed) that sound at the same time. The melodies must be intertwined in a way in which none of them prevails over the others.
